Unlike the static weight of a trailer and its load, tongue weight (the downward force that the tongue of the trailer puts on the hitch of the tow vehicle) can change based on how the load is placed and the weight is distributed on your trailer. Improper tongue weight can drastically affect trailer sway and ultimately the safety of your truck, its cargo, and most importantly, its occupants and the people on the road around you.
Experts have determined that your tongue weight should fall somewhere between 9% and 15% of your Gross Trailer Weight (GTW). It's doubtful that anyone wants to intentionally tow dangerously and intentions may be good but actually determining the tongue weight of your trailer can be daunting and might be guessed at by a visual check for sagging. Sadly, while too much tongue weight is not safe positioning the load so that the weight is actually below the recommendations is much worse. Having the load too far rearward will produce sway far more quickly than loading too much toward the front of the trailer. That's where The Weigh Safe Hitches with built-scales come to the rescue especially if your loads vary from tow to tow.
You can measure tongue weight without a Weigh Safe Hitch, of course. There is a method using a bathroom scale, bricks, 2x4 lumber and some math or you can find a commercial scale and measure your truck and trailer separately do some math to come up with an APPROXIMATE figure. There are also scales you can buy specifically made for measuring tongue weight but you will need to make sure you have one with you whenever your towing.
If you think the methods above sound complicated - you're right - and we've simplified them in this write-up! With The Weigh Safe Hitch and Scale, you will know the tongue weight the minute you hook-up. You can make adjustments on the spot and without unhooking your trailer. The built-in scale will also tell you if you are overloading your receiver or your ball mount. The Weigh Safe Fixed Height Ball Mount is ideal for driver's that are traveling with an empty trailer and picking up different size loads frequently.
